眠りの鎖に囚われた長い夜から目覚め,私は朝露の夜明けに外へ出た。
自然は静かに何かを待っているようだった。
私は意志という鉄の手で記憶の門を閉ざし,過去とその古い観念をすべて遮断した。
私の魂は新たに受け入れる心構えを持ち,耳は自然の調和ある律動に調えられた。遠く塩の香る深い海の彼方,私は微弱な光の柱が立ち上るのを見た。光は夜明けを淡い薔薇色に染めていた。
やがて太陽の円盤が夜を抜け出し,燃えるように完全な姿を現して世界を美しく目覚めさせた。

スティル博士がオステオパシーという医学思想に到った背景には、当時の医学に対する深い絶望と、それを乗り越えようとした強い意思がありました。
自分が苦心して学び身につけ信じてきた19世紀後半の北米医学を駆使しても、愛する家族の大半を流行り病から救えなかった。
この絶望を乗り越えようとする中でこれまでの北米医学の常識を捨て去って、全く新しい医学思想「オステオパシー」の啓示を博士は得ました。
この詩にはオステオパシーの種となった最初のインスピレーションを得た瞬間の感動が詩的に描き出されています。
